Hey there! Mandy here from Splendid Getaways. I just got back from the MOST AMAZING 8-day Costa Rican adventure with my husband and three teenage boys and I'm bursting to share it with you. Not just because the trip was epic (it was!), but because it perfectly showcases why having a travel advisor in your corner can take your vacation from "good" to "absolutely mind-blowing!"
Why Our Itinerary Was Perfect (If I Do Say So Myself)
As a travel advisor with three adventure-hungry teenage boys and with the help of my in-country experts, we created an itinerary that hit the sweet spot between adrenaline rushes and actual relaxation:
3 nights in La Fortuna (by Arenal Volcano) for all the heart-pounding rainforest fun
4 nights in Santa Teresa (on the Blue Zone peninsula) for beach time and wildlife
This split was perfect - we experienced two completely different ecosystems without spending half our vacation in transit. And Santa Teresa is so refreshingly undeveloped - none of that over-commercialized tourist trap vibe. It feels authentic in the best possible way. I strategically frontloaded the adventure activities first, then wound down with beach relaxation - the perfect rhythm for a family vacation.
Our waterfall rappelling day had us doing SEVEN rappels, including a 200-foot descent down an actual waterfall! It was terrifying at moments and physically demanding, but seeing my boys conquer those fears was priceless. Thank goodness I scheduled absolutely NOTHING else that day because I knew we'd be wiped out.
The Real Deal on Costa Rica
First things first - Costa Rica is drop-dead gorgeous, but let's get real about what to expect:
- Those Instagram-perfect views are everywhere and absolutely authentic, but getting to them involves bumpy, winding roads that would make even the most patient traveler grip their armrest.
- You'll need to embrace your inner early bird. Wildlife doesn't sleep in, and neither will you – especially with howler monkeys as your all-natural (and LOUD) alarm clock.
- And yes, you'll be sharing your space with bugs and lizards. It's the rainforest. That's part of the charm.
Insider Scoop: Stuff You Won't Find in the Guidebooks
After experiencing Costa Rica firsthand, here's what I want you to know:
- Cash is king for tipping: We dropped over $500 in tips during our week-long trip. US dollars work great, but bring smaller bills.
- Pack laundry soap: Trust me on this one. Adventure activities equal dirty clothes. Being able to wash things in your hotel sink allows you to pack light and stay fresh!
- Santa Teresa fashion alert: The vibe is totally bohemian-yoga-wellness. Leave those loud tropical shirts at home unless you want to scream "tourist."
- Water worries? Not really: Tap water is generally safe and bottled water is everywhere.
- Beach safety real talk: Santa Teresa has gorgeous beaches, but those waves mean business. The riptides don't mess around, so keep a close eye on the kiddos and if you opt for surfing lessons, go with a good, safety certified company.
- About those early mornings: Don't fight it. The howler monkeys will wake you anyway, and morning is when you'll see the coolest wildlife before the heat kicks in.
Making the Logistics Magic Happen
Let's be honest - Costa Rica's infrastructure can be... challenging. You need to drive everywhere, the roads are curvy and rough (Dramamine is your friend!) and travel times are no joke - 3 hours to Arenal, 2 hours to the cloud forest, and so on.
Here's where my travel advisor superpowers came in:
- Arranged expert private drivers who knew all the shortcuts and timing tricks
- Booked regional flights between San Jose and Santa Teresa (25 minutes vs. HOURS of driving)
- Strategically scheduled rest days between big adventures
- Coordinated seamless transfers between activities and accommodations
Our drivers were THE BEST - bilingual, knowledgeable, and always waiting for us right on time. And our tours were private with guides who have master's degrees in their fields! These weren't just tour guides - they were walking encyclopedias who kept even my teenage boys fascinated.
For those of you not used to flying in small planes, the plane to Santa Teresa only seats 12 people but saved us hours of driving. If that's a deal breaker, there's a much longer driving route. The domestic airport in San Jose is small, but confusing. Our driver and guide, Pablo, helped navigated it for us like a pro.
Speaking of Pablo, on our transfer day from La Fortuna to San Jose, he suggested breaking up the journey with a stop at the Monteverde Cloud Forest - turning a boring travel day into one of our favorite memories with a biologist led hike and lunch at a mountain top luxury resort.
You'll notice when working with a travel advisor that those little details matter - like knowing to recommend heavy-soled water shoes for waterfall rappelling (NOT the thin soled beach ones). Trust me, you don't want to learn that lesson the hard way.
Going Beyond the Tourist Trail

Our guide Marco in Santa Teresa (who casually speaks English, Spanish, AND French - show-off!) took us to Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve to spott wildlife we would have walked right past - white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, deer, tarantulas, exotic birds, and even a boa constrictor. He also recommended a little local restaurant for dinner that wasn't in any guidebook and ended up being one of our favorite meals of the trip.
And on our chocolate and coffee tour with Maria at Don Juan's we didn't just learn about chocolate and coffee - we MADE our own chocolate bars and tasted coffee like we were sommoliers. My boys were actually learning about local agriculture and enjoying it.

At Arenal Springs Resort and Spa, my professional connections scored us an upgrade to a suite with TWO jacuzzis for my husband and me! We had connecting rooms with our boys which both had private porches perfect for wildlife watching, where we saw those famous howler monkeys announcing dawn every morning.
But the absolute highlight was our boat tour to Tortuga Island. Instead of cramming onto a crowded booze cruise, our private excursion with Captain Michael took us to two secluded beaches where we had entire stretches of paradise ALL TO OURSELVES. Meanwhile, at Arenal Springs Resort, the included breakfast featured an amazing smoothie bar (my 12-year-old practically lived there), omlette stations, tropical fruits, and incredible Costa Rican coffee - providing serious value for our food budget each day.
Our Day-by-Day Costa Rica Highlight Reel
Day 1: Waterfall Rappelling in La Fortuna
Picture this: A bumpy 4x4 ride up a volcano, followed by a challenging hike, all leading to our first 200-foot waterfall descent! The guides were incredible at balancing safety with excitement as we conquered seven different rappels. The "monkey drop" had us literally letting go and trusting the guides to control our fall into a natural pool. We crawled into bed that night completely exhausted but absolutely buzzing with adrenaline.
Day 2: Ziplining, Crafts & Chocolate
Morning brought 12 canopy ziplines, some stretching 2 kilometers and hitting speeds of 70 kph. Talk about flying! We followed this with visits to indigenous craftspeople and horseback riding. Then came Maria's chocolate and coffee tour at Don Juan's, where we made our own chocolate bars and tasted coffee like professionals. The boys were surprisingly into learning about the bean-to-bar process.
Day 3: Cloud Forest & Travel Day
Our driver Pablo suggested breaking up our transfer with a Monteverde Cloud Forest stop - best detour ever. A biologist guide revealed the incredible biodiversity of this misty wonderland. We enjoyed a luxurious lunch at a luxury mountaintop resort surrounded by hummingbirds before continuing to San Jose for our flight to Santa Teresa.
Day 4: Boat Tour & Snorkeling
Possibly our favorite day began with Captain Michael taking us by private boat to Tortuga Island for world-class snorkeling. He then whisked us to two different secluded beaches where his crew prepared a gourmet lunch. We spent hours swimming, playing beach games and enjoying an afternoon siesta under palm trees - the kind of unhurried, authentic experience that defines luxury travel.
Day 5: Wildlife Spotting at Cabo Blanco
Guide Marco showcased his expertise at Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve, helping us spot so much wildlife! His encyclopedic knowledge of local ecosystems kept even my boys engaged with questions. His local restaurant recommendation that evening led to an outstanding authentic dinner.
Day 6: Beach Resort Bliss
Finally, we slowed down to enjoy our beautiful Nantipa Resort - playing in the pool, walking along the beach, enjoying included gourmet breakfasts and exploring Santa Teresa shops. This perfectly timed relaxation day let us recharge before heading home.
Day 7: Smooth Journey Home
A quick flight from Santa Teresa to San Jose connected us with our international flight home, avoiding hours of difficult driving on our final day. Genius!
